The socket-shield technique for 2 anterior immediate dental implants with immediate temporization
by Dr. Francesco Mintrone
The socket-shield technique was introduced in 2010 by Hurzeler et al. The technique is considered as a highly promising procedure that has the potential to prevent resorption of anterior alveolar ridges, maintains white and pink esthetics, and provides a solution for esthetically critical cases. This clinical video by Dr Francesco Mintrone presents a challenging anterior esthetic case with 2 failing central incisors that are treated with partial root retention (socket-shield technique) in combination with immediate implant placement and immediate implant temporization. The critical steps to perform this technique-sensitive procedure are demonstrated in detail. The follow-up of this case shows that retaining the buccal aspect of the root during implant placement does not appear to interfere with osseointegration and may be beneficial in preserving the buccal bone plate and soft tissues.
